The Invisible Games of Corporate Power™

You can be excellent at your job and still lose a game you did not know was being played.

Nine games are running around you at work. Most capable people spend a year explaining each step to themselves before they see the pattern. That delay is the whole cost.

When everyday routines start to feel a little predictable, many of us look for simple ways to add a bit of light entertainment to an evening at home. Community-style games, quick chats with fellow players, and the satisfying rhythm of a familiar pastime are exactly the kind of low-pressure fun that fits around a busy schedule. For anyone in the UK who enjoys that relaxed social atmosphere, UK players exploring bingo sites not on GamStop will find a number of independently licensed platforms that cater to this hobby. Before joining any of them, it is worth reviewing the operator's licence, payment terms, and available responsible-gambling tools, and treating bingo as entertainment rather than a route to making money.

Ten questions across four lenses. Not a personality test — it tells you which lens is currently costing you most, and which playbook answers it.

The 90-day journal

One prompt a day, by email. What you observed, what you thought it meant, how sure you were — and what would prove you wrong.
The problem

Two ledgers are kept on you.

The one you were trained for
Visible. Improvable. You can see the score.
The one nobody mentioned
Kept in rooms you are not in. Nobody shows you the score.
Only one of them was ever explained

Most capable people work exclusively on the first ledger for years, and conclude from the silence that they must not be good enough yet. That conclusion is usually wrong, and it is expensive.

If you are reading this with a situation in mind

You have probably already seen it. Most people have.

What usually fails is not the seeing. It is the believing — because believing obliges something expensive. Each one has a name →

Read this before you buy anything

You have been running the analysis on yourself.

A decision goes the wrong way. A room goes cold. A promise quietly expires.

And you go looking for the fault in yourself first — because that is what capable people were trained to do. So you work harder. You wait for the situation to explain itself.

It never does.

What people do to you is a report on them, not a verdict on you.

Most of the time it was never about you at all. That is not consolation — it is accuracy. And it gives you back the capacity that self-blame was quietly consuming.

Where to start

What are you actually trying to work out?

Corporate politics
How do decisions really get made here — and why am I never in that conversation?

Where power actually sits, who holds the pen, and why the meeting is almost never the moment the decision was made. Four routes to influence, six system games.

Reading people
Something is being run at me and I cannot put a name to it.
Nine games in three families — on your credit, your access, and whether the work moves. Plus three patterns that are not games at all, and are not to be out-read.
Reading your boss
They are warm with me, and nothing ever comes of it.
Where power actually sits, who holds the pen, and why the meeting is almost never the moment the decision was made. Four routes to influence, six system games.

The book behind the method

Read People Before They Read You

The most expensive mistakes of your working life will not come from what you did not know. They will come from who you misread.

Confidence is not competence. Charm is not character. Agreement is not support. Silence is not consent. Kindness is not loyalty.

The method

Naming is where reading becomes action. Most of these patterns weaken the moment you can put a word to them.

The author

I have sat on both sides of the table.

Thirty years in global supply chain and procurement, across twenty-four countries — including twenty-six years deciding which suppliers got the contract. I sat in the rooms where decisions about people and careers were actually made, and watched capable people lose them without ever seeing it happen.

I reached the C-suite. The games were also played on me, and it cost me. High performance did not save me.
